Herb Shop: Guidelines on the Safe Use of Individual Herbs

Disclaimer: The following is given as general information and should not be considered as medical advice or used as an alternative to professional diagnosis and treatment. The information given on herbs is not a guarantee that they will have the effects or benefits mentioned here, or that they will always be safe for you to use!

About our high quality herbal remedies: Almost all our herbal remedies are made from certified organically grown or wild crafted plants (wild crafted means they are collected from the wild under license from sustainable sources). Many of them are also Bio-dynamically grown and made from the fresh plant (rather than from a dried one). Many practitioners believe fresh plant extracts retain a better range of the plants qualities. Most of our fresh plant extracts are 1:1 strength that are classed as fluid or liquid extracts. The 1:1 ratio offers a higher concentration of active ingredients than tinctures that are usually of a 1:3 to 1:5 strength. Most of our fresh plant extracts are of the 1:1 strength because they have a high water content that dilutes some of the phytochemical ingredients in the extract. The 1:1 ratio helps to counterbalance this loss so they have both a vital or energetic quality with we hope a similar phytochemical strength as a 1:5 tincture made from dried plants.

Availability of our herbal remedies: There are two parts to our herbal business. 1. Herbs for individual patients. We currently only supply our herbal remedies to patients who have had a recommendation for a specific herb or mixture after a consultation with a suitably qualified health professional. 2. We also have a formulation and product design service with over 15 years of experience based upon the advice of a qualified herbal practitioner. We supply large quantities of herbal oils, clays, creams and other herbal products to other companies.

What are tinctures and fluid extracts? They are made from soaking herbs for two weeks or more in pure alcohol (which also contains some water). Research has shown that this is an ideal method of extracting the widest range of active ingredients from whole herbs, and in keeping levels of active ingredients stable for a long period of time. They are not usually heated so have the advantage over herbal teas in that they have no loss of active ingredients from heat and evaporation.

What if I am sensitive to alcohol? There is actually very little alcohol in a tincture (percentages are listed with each one below but can sometimes vary), and the normal dose is usually only around 2 to 4ml (a small teaspoon) at a time. The human body has evolved to cope with small amounts of alcohol due to the natural fermentation found with some foods. To reduce the alcohol level in a tincture put the required dose in a cup and add a small amount of boiling water, allow to cool for a few minutes in which time a lot of the alcohol content will be evaporated off.
NB. If you have a history of addiction to alcohol or have an allergic reaction to it, please seek advice from your health care practitioner before use.
